Most studios in Philadelphia offer drop-in classes, and many have beginner-friendly or all-levels options. Some good entry points by style:

Ballet: Philadelphia Ballet offers open classes at multiple levels. BalletX runs contemporary ballet workshops periodically.

Contemporary / modern: Koresh Dance Company has regular open classes. Mascher Space Co-op hosts workshops and jams.

Hip hop: Rennie Harris Puremovement offers foundations classes in North Philadelphia.

West African: Ile Ife Black Humanitarian Center in West Philly runs regular classes with live drumming.

Social dance: Salsa, bachata, and swing all have weekly social nights with beginner lessons built in. Check the calendar for this week’s socials.

Aerial / circus: Circadium School in Fishtown offers intro classes in silks, trapeze, and more.

Philadelphia has performances most weekends, ranging from $0 to $75. Filter by “performances” to see what’s coming up. FringeArts, Performance Garage, and Mascher Space tend to host more experimental work. The Suzanne Roberts Theatre and Merriam Theater host larger productions.

Social dances are the easiest way in — no partner or experience needed, just show up. Open jams at Mascher Space are welcoming. Most classes have a community feel, especially recurring ones where you see the same faces each week.

Our calendar and listings help people find classes, performances, auditions, jobs, and funding. Everything is organized in one flat, searchable feed where a free community drum circle and a $75 ballet premiere sit side by side.

Calendar events (classes, performances, workshops, social dances) are always free to post. This is the public utility layer — the more complete it is, the better it serves everyone.

Opportunity listings (auditions, jobs, funding, space) are paid. This is what sustains the platform and keeps us independent. Pricing is tiered: individuals and independent artists pay less than organizations.

The directory is strictly Philadelphia. Companies, venues, schools, and independent artists working in the city.

Listing fees and subscriptions fund: platform hosting and maintenance and the annual micro-grant for emerging choreographers. We publish a transparency report each year.
